A pin up & rockabilly HagParty theme for the bride to be is a naughty but nice excuse for all party-goers to embrace their inner 1950’s Betty Paige, Elvis Presley etc. If you are on a tight budget, the good news is that this theme does not have to cost the earth to achieve, in fact you can cut the immediate overhead cost by having a house party and using money to create your own mid-century styled space with nostalgic props.
George’s St Arcade is a great place for sourcing props, being a treasure trove for all things retro & vintage! Keep your eyes peeled for pin up style postcards; these can be used as your invitations, to set the tone of your HagParty.
After you have gathered your props and craft items (see below for list), you can start setting up your space. A styled table for nibbles and tipples is always a great focal point for the room as it will be the first place people will flock, when they arrive. A tablecloth and vintage serve ware will take you a long way in achieving the desired look Add some edge with a monochrome stripe tablecloth and accessories – less retro diner and more Dita Von Teese’ kitchen!
I find that the best HagParties are always the ones where the guests can get involved so don’t be shy in asking yours to bring something to the table – literally! For this party, they could bring an ingredient from your vintage cocktail recipe, a set of lacy lingerie and one lipstick. The first being self explanatory, the latter two are for games!
These games will not only score some laughter but are easy to set up with the help of your guests’ lingerie sets and some craft items. ‘Bra pong’ is the HagParty version of beer pong whereby one has to pocket their ping pong ball into a lacy bra, that you have nicely pinned to a board and if somebody misses…well you can decide their forfeit. ‘The Brief case’ game is made up of a knickers bunting and naughty excuse for a kinky game of guess who’s knickers. The hag is the guess master.
With all this nostalgia in the air, a few bars of Lesley Gore & Brenda Lee would get the party mood, in full 50’s swing. A couple of your vintage microphones at the ready (made from the finest hair brushes) and u will have your very own billboards show.
Simple GalleryNow that you have a room full of Bette Paige & Elvis Presley wannabes, it would be a shame not to capture this iconic moment! Selfies were not en vogue in the 1950s so choose Polaroids as a cool alternative. For a photo backdrop, all you will need is some large format paper, perhaps vintage shades of powder blue or mint green. which can be tum tacked to your wall. Say cheese!
Remember, no HagParty is complete without a souvenir guest board, so leave a large framed piece of card at the door so your guests can kiss your board, using the lippy they brought; giving the hag’s marriage the seal of approval.
Of course, If money is no object then I’d fully recommend taking your show on the road & hiring out a vintage party bus for a stylish spin around the city.
